About voice and video chat

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Download the Gmail voice and video chat plug-in, quit all open browser windows, and install the plug-in.

Sign in to Gmail.

In the Chat section of your Gmail, select the contact you want to call. If they have a camera icon next to their name, you can make a voice or video call to them; just click Video & more.

If your friend doesn’t have a camera next to their name in your chat list, you can invite them to download the Gmail voice and video chat plug-in from the Video & more menu in a chat window. Even if your friend doesn’t have a video camera, you can still make a voice call or a 1-way video call.

Please select your issue below to see troubleshooting information.

I can’t call contacts from Gmail

Video calls are only available between Gmail chat users with a Gmail voice and video chat plug-in enabled browser. If you and your friend are both signed in to Gmail, download the Gmail voice and video plug-in by clicking ‘Video & More’ or ‘Options’ at the bottom of a chat window. From this menu, click ‘Add voice/video chat’ and follow the instructions to install the plug-in.

Voice calls are only available to those using Gmail chat or the Google Talk client. If you’re using Gmail’s chat feature, you’ll need to download the Gmail voice and video plug-in by clicking ‘Video & More’ or ‘Options’ at the bottom of a chat window. From this menu, click ‘Add voice/video chat’ and follow the instructions to install the Google Talk plug-in.

Why isn’t there a camera next to my friend’s name in my ‘Chat’ list?

If your friend is signed into chat, but does not have a camera icon next to his or her name in your ‘Chat’ list, he or she isn’t available for voice and video calls. If your friend is using Gmail, they may not have installed the Gmail voice and video plug-in. You can invite your friend to install the plug-in by opening a chat window with them and selecting ‘Invite to voice/video chat’ in the ‘Video & more’ menu. If your friend doesn’t have a camera but has installed the plug-in, you can still make one-way video calls or voice calls.

Friends signed in to chat with the Google Talk client will be able to receive voice calls, but will not be able to place or receive video calls and will not have a camera icon in your chat list. Other friends who access chat with 3rd party IM clients and services or friends who are signed in using the Google Talk Gadget, instead of Gmail’s chat feature, won’t be available for calls.

I can’t see/hear my friend

If you are unable to see or hear your friend, please ask them to check that their webcam and microphone are properly connected to their computer and are not being used by any other open programs. They can also check that their settings are correctly enabled by visiting the ‘Chat’ tab of their Gmail account settings. Just expand the ‘Verify settings’ section and check if their webcam’s video appears, their microphone is picking up sound, and their speakers can play the test sound.

If you are unable to hear your friend but their microphone works when they test it, there are a few common reasons why you might not hear your friends when using voice and video chat in Gmail. Please make sure that your speakers are enabled and the volume is turned on. If you’re using external speakers, check that they’re properly connected to your computer.

My friend can’t see/hear me

To test if your microphone, speakers, and webcam are working properly with Gmail voice and video, please visit the ‘Chat’ tab in your Gmail account settings. In the ‘Voice and video settings’ section, expand the ‘Verify settings’ option and check that you are able to see your webcam’s video, your microphone is picking up sound, and your speakers can play the test sound.

If your microphone isn’t working, please make sure that your microphone is plugged in and the volume is turned on. Here’s how to turn on your microphone with Windows XP:

Click the ‘Start’ menu in your taskbar, and highlight ‘Settings.’

Select ‘Control Panel.’

Locate ‘Sounds and Audio Devices’ in the Control Panel, and double-click the icon.

Open the ‘Volume’ tab, and click ‘Advanced…’ in the ‘Device volume’ section.

Look for ‘Microphone’ in the ‘Volume Control’ box that opens, and make sure your microphone is enabled and the volume is high enough.

Close the ‘Volume Control’ box, and then click ‘OK.’

Here’s how to turn on your microphone on a Mac:

Click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your screen and select ‘System Preferences…’

Click the ‘Sound’ icon.

Select the ‘Input’ tab.

Look for ‘Input volume:’ and set your volume so that the meter sound meter moves when you speak.

Close the sound preferences window.

If you can’t see your webcam’s video, please make sure that your webcam is properly plugged in to your computer and no other open programs are using the camera.

Please also check that Gmail is using the correct webcam, microphone, and speakers. On the ‘Chat’ tab in your Gmail account settings, select the appropriate devices from the ‘Camera:,’ ‘Microphone:’ and ‘Speakers: drop-down menus.

My webcam isn’t working with Gmail

If Gmail doesn’t seem to be capturing your webcam, please check that it is properly plugged in to your computer and that no other open programs are using the camera.

To test your webcam, visit the ‘Chat’ tab in your Gmail account settings. Expand the ‘Verify settings’ option next to ‘Voice and video settings:’ and check to see if you are able to see your webcam’s video. If not, verfiy that the correct webcam is selected in the ‘Camera:’ drop-down menu.

Poor video quality

If you’re experiencing poor video quality during a call, please make sure that no other programs are attempting to use your webcam. Closing other open applications or downloads may also improve the quality of your video.

If your webcam is plugged in to a USB hub, please try plugging your webcam directly into your computer.

Please also note that if you are using a DSL modem with a slow uplink, a 3G wireless modem, or a network with some types of proxies to make video calls, your call quality may suffer.

Gmail isn’t using the right microphone, speaker, or webcam device

If Gmail isn’t using the correct microphone, speaker, or webcam device, follow the steps below to change your settings:

Click ‘Settings’ at the top-right of your Gmail account.

Select the ‘Chat’ tab.

In the ‘Voice and video chat:’ section, adjust the selections in the drop-down menus for your camera, microphone, and speakers.

There’s an echo

If you are experiencing an echo when voice or video chatting, your microphone or speaker volume might be set too high. Please try turning down your volume or using headphones on both ends of the call.

For those who are new to IIS7’s ARR module, here are the benefits it provides:

Balance loads more efficiently across servers to maximize resource utilization

By taking advantage of Application Request Routing, administrators have the ability to create powerful routing rules based on URL, HTTP headers and server variables to determine the most appropriate Web application server for each request. ARR makes request routing decisions at the application level, and can be used in conjunction with hardware load balancers as an added layer of control over HTTP requests. For example, using the Application Request Router, administrators are able to route all *.aspx requests to a dynamic group of dedicated Web application servers, which can scale up and down based on traffic demands, while requests for video content, images, javascript and other static content can be served from the ARR machine, or a separate group of servers.

Increase Security and Scalability of Application Servers

Administrators can use IIS7 and the Application Request Routing feature on a reduced-footprint Windows Server core machine(s) to handle incoming requests, and then place traditional Web Application Servers on a middle tier of machines, which can protected behind additional firewalls and not exposed directly to the internet. This protects feature-rich Web application servers from being directly exposed to internet hacking attempts, and enables to scale-out cpu-intensive Web application servers independently.

Manage and monitor multiple server farms more easily through IIS Manager

ARR lets administrators create, manage, and apply load balancing rules to server farms in IIS 7.0 Manager. Administrators can then easily add or remove servers from a server farm to match demand without impacting application availability. ARR also includes live traffic and URL test monitoring capabilities to determine the health of individual servers and configuration settings, while allowing administrators to view aggregated runtime statistics in IIS 7.0 Manager.

Optimize and scale server capacity through client and host name affinity

Administrators can use ARR to route all requests from a specific client to a specific Web application server in a server farm by creating an affinity between the client and server. ARR includes the ability to differentiate clients behind Network Address Traversal (NAT) firewalls and hardware load-balancers, so each client is treated independently. Host name affinity lets hosting providers optimize resources per server and offer scaled solutions by routing requests to servers based on host name.

Features

Apple iBangle’s a multi-touch track pad for easy navigation, and the audio finds its way to your ears via a couple of wireless earbuds. Alas, there’s no screen, but designer Gopinath Prasana figures you can navigate just fine with an audio-oriented navigation system.

The future looks to be one where we access most of our data and applications from remote data centres, not from our personal hard disk or internal server rooms

Later this month, IBM will launch what it calls the Blue Business Platform, a system designed for small and medium enterprises to access a host of software applications and services remotely. The project has been piloted internally, and the first launch will be in India.
The system will enable SMEs to access applications like ERP (enterprise resource planning), CRM (customer relationship management), inventory management, payroll management, and services like storage, back-up and recovery, and remote administration. They can access the services when they want it and for the period they want it. And pay only for the period of time they use the service.
What that means is SMEs wouldn’t have to buy these applications and install them in their own hardware. In fact, this latter option is often so expensive that many SMEs today avoid using most software applications. It also involves keeping a large IT staff just to manage that infrastructure, which adds to costs.
Under the Blue Business Platform, IBM will maintain the entire hardware and software in a remote data centre location, and all that customers have to do is to look at a “nice user interface” and click for whatever they need.
“You can order it online and pay for it online. It provides for great ease of management,” says Rod Adkins, senior vice president in IBM’s systems and technology group, which is driving the initiative.
Such systems are what today is popularly known as cloud computing. All your data and resources reside in a remote location — the cloud — and you access them from any device at any time. And since the cloud can be a huge data centre or a set of connected data centres with thousands of servers, the compute power that you could potentially have access to is exponentially more than you as an individual or a small company can have if you were dependent on only the hardware you own.
Diptarup Chakraborti, principal research analyst at Gartner, believes countries like India that do not have legacy systems will find it particularly easy to deploy cloud computing systems for storage, desktop, server and other applications. “There’s a huge opportunity in this. It helps to reduce cost and to scale without hassles of handling assets such as hardware infrastructure,” he says.
Balu Balasubramanya, country manager for Institute of Engineering & Technology, adds that in a cloud computing environment, you wouldn’t need to fear obsolescence of software and hardware, and believes that the market in India for software delivered as a service (from a cloud) will touch Rs 1,000 crore by 2010. Gartner predicts that more than 25% of business software will be delivered as a service by 2011.
Many companies are seen to be scrambling to offer products based on cloud computing or software as a service (SaaS). Microsoft has a subscription based model for SQL servers (for database management) for SMEs. The servers are available on the basis of a per month or per user charge. Salesforce.com offers CRM solutions using the SaaS model. Oracle has partnered with Amazon Web Services environment to offer its software and database in the cloud. SAP is entering the arena with an online tool for companies to select and manage suppliers.

Clouds for individuals

Clouds are coming into play very strongly for individuals too. Already, many of the applications we use come from clouds, be it emails, photo storing/sharing apps like Yahoo’s Flickr or Google’s Picasa, music banks like iTunes and social networking apps like Facebook. Microsoft’s Windows Live gives you the instant messenger, blogging, and file sharing functions. Google gives you document applications over the internet, so that you don’t have to install one in your hard disk. But companies are now working on more comprehensive and sophisticated functionalities.
In March this year, in these pages, we brought you the story of Pi (now an EMC company), which is working to enable you to put all your personal information and data on a cloud so that they are available to you 24/7 and you can use them the way you like and when you like, be it on your laptop, cellphone, PDA, or any other device. Arathy Kundapur, GM of the Bangalore division of Pi, where much of this work is going on, says that since March, the project has made a lot more progress and EMC is likely soon to make announcements regarding specific services. “We are discussing issues like how to go to market,” she says.
The service, Kundpur says, will function like a bank. “Just as a bank takes your money, gives a guarantee of safety, and then offers services around it, like paying your bills, we will be like a bank for personal data, ensure safety of that data and then have functionalities around it,” she says. The possibilities are phenomenal. You can have your phone fully backed up on the cloud so that even if you are moving to another phone, you can have access to all your data in the first phone. If your travel plans are on the cloud, you can link it to a travel agency that can give you relevant information about hotels etc. If you are traveling and you want to play your music playset, you don’t have to worry about carrying the playset with you since you have it on the cloud. Pi is also working on a method to store all kinds of info in a common way, so you can see almost everything — photos, documents, emails, etc — on a single browser. “We are removing the folders metaphor, so you can organise things any which way you want,” says Kundapur.

Mega Power

Clouds also become critical for computationally intensive jobs. Your search queries on a Google or Yahoo give you almost instantaneous results because clouds consisting of thousands of servers are processing petabytes of data. Rajeev Rastogi, head of Yahoo! Labs, Bangalore, says this same level of computational intensity is what allows a Yahoo to match ads with users. “The system needs to quickly understand what the query or page is about, what the characteristics of the user are — age, gender, location, past behaviour — to target the right ads. This is critical for our revenues,” he says.
What this power also allows is to give you more computing capacity when you need it. Thus, a bank could ask a service provider for extra capacity on days when, for instance, they have a loan mela, says Satish Babu, IT architect at IBM’s India Software Lab. “Or if somebody runs out of space to expand their data centre, they could access a cloud,” he says. Accordingly, different cloud service models could emerge — like those offering more security (which banks may want), or faster responsiveness (necessary for call centres).

The PLATFORM

Cloud computing, strictly speaking, is not merely about hosting applications that anybody can access. It is about putting a platform onto the cloud that not only enables customers to access software that they need, but also can be accessed by independent software vendors (ISVs) to create and host applications that support the core offering. Salesforce’s AppExchange is one such, which allows third party developers to create add-on applications that integrate into the main Salesforce application and are hosted on salesforce.com’s infrastructure. As of September 2008, there are over 800 applications available from over 450 ISVs. IBM Blue Business Platform, similarly, will allow ISVs to host applications targeted at the SME market. Microsoft’s dot net platform is expected to be available on the cloud soon. Moorthy Uppaluri, director (developer and platform evangelist) in Microsoft India, says the database, storage and APIs (application programming interface) will be available for users to build custom applications around it. “For example, an insurance application can be built using the platform from the cloud. The developer just needs to bring in the domain expertise,” he says. Rajeev Rastogi, head of Yahoo! Labs, Bangalore, says a developer can write an application as though he is writing for a single machine. “He does not have to worry about things like how many machines the application will run on, how it will run, what would happen if a machine fails. All that will be taken care of by the cloud computing software,” he says.

Serena moves to the CLOUD

As part of an effort to cut costs, Serena Software has moved from Microsoft Exchange to Google’s Gmail for all their e-mail needs. Some 50 employees have already made the switch and by the end of 2008 the transition is expected to be complete. The company has planned for issues such as security, backup and possible outages. The emails from the company will appear to be coming from their domain, Serena.com. With over 800 employees worldwide, the company sees this as a good way to reduce resource and infrastructure costs. “We are spending almost a million dollars a year, as much as nearly 10% of our R&D budget, on buying products. Moving things like email to the cloud will help to reduce that,” says Ren Bonvanie, senior VP for worldwide marketing in Serena Software. The next move is towards a server-less organization — by shifting every possible aspect of its operations to cloud computing solutions. Munindra Kumar Bharatee, MD of Serena, says this will not only reduce costs on the hardware, software, network, installation and further upgrades, but also remove the complexity of maintenance. The company will then pay only for what they use and not the ownership costs. “This will also allow us to be as nimble as our customers expect us to be,” says Bonvanie.

Instead you’ll have to head to the Apple iTunes download page and run the installer manually.

One odd thing in the installer, if you hit the “advanced” button you’ll notice that there’s a grayed out option to install the “iTunes Phone Driver.” Since it wasn’t selectable, I just reverted to a “easy” install and I was still able to register and activate the phone without incident. Still, the presence of the driver should get the rumor mills going (if you have an explanation drop it in the comments below).

Here’s a shot by shot walk through of the registration process. It’s actually quite simple. It took far more time to grab these shots than the actually do it. And don’t let the rumors of 20 minute delays put you off, it took about three minutes.

There’s the curiously useless driver.

It actually took considerably less than three minutes to activate.

There’s an auto sync option, but since I have considerably more music than the iPhone can hold, I went for the manual method

The main iPhone screen. The setup mirrors that of an iPod with tabs along the top for all your different sync elements.

The main sync screen for email, contacts and calendars.

Syncing photos. I don’t use iPhoto, so not much to show. There doesn’t seem to be an option for Aperture even.

Firefox supports tabbed browsing, which allows users to open multiple pages in the same window. This feature was carried over from the Mozilla Application Suite, which in turn had borrowed the feature from the popular MultiZilla extension for Mozilla.

Firefox also permits the “homepage” to be a list of URLs delimited with vertical bars (|), which are automatically opened in separate tabs, rather than a single page.

Firefox 3 supports more tabbed browsing features, including a “tab overflow” solution that keeps the user’s tabs easily accessible when they would otherwise become illegible, “session store” which lets the user keep the opened tabs across the restarts, an “undo close tab” feature, as well as others.

New features for end users

User experience

Easier password management. An information bar at the top of the browser window now appears to allow you to save passwords after a successful login.

Simplified add-on installation. You can now install extensions from third-party download sites in fewer clicks, thanks to the removal of the add-on download site whitelist.

New Download Manager. The download manager makes it easier to locate your downloaded files.

Resumable downloads. You can now resume downloads after restarting the browser or resetting your network connection.

Full page zoom. From the View menu and using keyboard shortcuts, you can now zoom in and out on the content of entire pages — this scales not just the text but the layout and images as well.

Tab scrolling and quickmenu. Tabs are easier to locate with the new tab scrolling and tab quickmenu features.

Save what you were doing. Firefox 3 prompts you to see if you’d like to save your current tabs when you exit Firefox.

Optimized Open in Tabs behavior. Opening a folder of bookmarks in tabs now appends the new tabs instead of replacing the existing ones.

Easier to resize location and search bars. You can now easily resize the location and search bars using a simple resize handle between them.

Text selection improvements. You can now select multiple ranges of text using the Control (Command on Macintosh) key. Double-clicking and dragging now selects in “word-by-word” mode. Triple-clicking selects an entire paragraph.

Find toolbar. The Find toolbar now opens with the current selection.

Plugin management. Users can now disable individual plugins in the Add-on Manager.

Integration with Windows Vista. Firefox’s menus now display using Vista’s native theme.

Integration with Mac OS X. Firefox now supports Growl for notifications of completed downloads and available updates.

Star button. The new star button in the location bar lets you quickly add a new bookmark with a single click. A second click lets you file and tag your new bookmark.

Tags. You can now associate keywords with your bookmarks to easily sort them by topic.

Location bar and auto-complete. Type the title or tag of a page in the location bar to quickly find the site you were looking for in your history and bookmarks. Favicons, bookmark, and tag indicators help you see where the results are coming from.

Smart Bookmarks folder. Firefox’s new Smart Bookmarks folder offers quick access to your recently bookmarked and tagged places, as well as pages you visit frequently.

Bookmarks and History Organizer. The new unified bookmarks and history organizer lets you easily search your history and bookmarks with multiple views and smart folders for saving your frequent searches.

Web-based protocol handlers. Web applications, such as your favorite web mail provider, can now be used instead of desktop applications for handling
mailto:
links from other sites. Similar support is provided for other protocols as well. (Note that web applications do have to register themselves with Firefox before this will work.)

Easy to use Download Actions. A new Applications preferences pane provides an improved user interface for configuring handlers for various file types and protocol schemes.

Improved look and feel. Graphics and font handling have been improved to make web sites look better on your screen, including sharper text rendering and better support for fonts with ligatures and complex scripts. In addition, Mac and Linux (Gnome) users will find that Firefox feels more like a native application for their platform than ever, with a new, native, look and feel.

Color management support. By setting the
gfx.color_management.enabled
preference in
[about:config]
, you can ask Firefox to use the color profiles embedded in images to adjust the colors to match your computer’s display.

Offline support. Web applications can take advantage of new features to support being used even when you don’t have an Internet connection.

Security and privacy

One-click site information. Want to know more about the site you’re visiting? Click the site’s icon in the location bar to see who owns it. Identify information is prominently displayed and easier than ever to understand.

Malware protection. Firefox 3 warns you if you arrive at a web site that is known to install viruses, spyware, trojans, or other dangerous software (known as malware).

Web forgery protection enhanced. Now when you visit a page that’s suspected of being a forgery, you’re shown a special page instead of the contents of the page with a warning.

Easier to understand SSL errors. The errors presented when an invalid SSL certificate is encountered have been clarified to make it easier to understand what the problem is.

Out-of-date add-on protection. Firefox 3 now automatically checks add-on and plugin versions and disables older, insecure versions.

Secure add-on updates. Add-on update security has been improved by disallowing add-ons that use an insecure update mechanism.

Anti-virus integration. Firefox 3 now informs anti-virus software when executable files are downloaded.

Windows Vista parental controls support. Firefox 3 supports the Vista system-wide parental control setting for disabling file downloads.

Performance

Reliability. Firefox 3 now stores bookmarks, history, cookies, and preferences in a transactionally secure database format. This means your data is protected against loss even if your system crashes.

Speed. Firefox 3 has gotten a performance boost by completely replacing the part of the software that handles drawing to your screen, as well as to how page layout work is handled.

Memory use reduced. Firefox 3 is more memory efficient than ever, with over 300 memory “leak” bugs fixed and new features to help automatically locate and dispose of leaked memory blocks.

In addition to regular Windows Vista updates, application compatibility improvements, and device driver improvements, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is another way Microsoft will deliver improvements to the Windows Vista customer experience.

The goal of Windows Vista SP1 is to address key feedback Microsoft has received from its customers without regressing application compatibility. Windows Vista SP1 will deliver improvements and enhancements to existing features that significantly impact customers, but it does not deliver substantial new operating system features. For example, the service pack improves the performance of the desktop shell, but does not include a new version of Windows® Media Center.

The updates in Windows Vista SP1 fall into three categories, which the following sections describe in detail:

Quality improvements, including all previously released updates, which address reliability, security, and performance.

Improvements to the administration experience, including BitLockerTM Drive Encryption (BDE).

Support for emerging hardware and standards, such as an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) and an Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT).

Quality Improvements

Quality improvements have the broadest impact on all customers. It is the foundation of Windows Vista SP1 and is about improving the overall Windows Vista experience.

First, Windows Vista SP1 will include all previously released updates for Windows Vista. It also will include security, reliability, and performance improvements. These improvements target some of the issues Microsoft has identified as the most common causes of operating system crashes and hangs, giving customers a more reliable experience. These updates also improve performance in key scenarios-for example, when copying files or shutting down the computer.

The following sections describe many of the security, reliability, and performance improvements that will be in Windows Vista SP1.

Security

Security improvements that will be in Windows Vista SP1 include:

Provides security software vendors a more secure way to communicate with Windows Security Center.

Includes application programming interfaces (APIs) by which third-party security and malicious software detection applications can work with kernel patch protection on x64 versions of Windows Vista. These APIs help ISVs develop software that extends the functionality of the Windows kernel on x64 computers without disabling or weakening the protection offered by kernel patch protection.

Improves the security of running RemoteApp programs and desktops by allowing Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) files to be signed. Customers can differentiate user experiences based on publisher identity.

Adds an Elliptical Curve Cryptography (ECC) pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) to the list of available PRNGs in Windows Vista.

Enhances BitLocker Drive Encryption (BDE) to offer an additional multifactor authentication method that combines a key protected by the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) with a Startup key stored on a USB storage device and a user-generated personal identification number (PIN).

Reliability

Windows Vista SP1 will include improvements that target some of the most common causes of crashes and hangs, giving users a more consistent experience. Many of these improvements will specifically address issues identified from the Windows Error Reporting tool. The following list describes some of the reliability improvements that Windows Vista SP1 will include:

Improved reliability and compatibility of Windows Vista when used with newer graphics cards in several specific scenarios and configurations.

Improved reliability when working with external displays on a laptop.

Improved Windows Vista reliability in networking configuration scenarios.

Improved reliability of systems that were upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista.

Increased compatibility with many printer drivers.

Increased reliability and performance of Windows Vista when entering sleep and resuming from sleep.

Performance

The following list describes some of the performance improvements that Windows Vista SP1 will include:

Improves the speed of copying and extracting files.

Improves the time to become active from Hibernate and Resume modes.

Improves the performance of domain-joined PCs when operating off the domain; in the current release version of Windows Vista, users would experience long delays when opening the File dialog box.

Improves performance of Windows® Internet Explorer® 7 in Windows Vista, reducing CPU utilization and speeding JavaScript parsing.

Improves battery life by reducing CPU utilization by not redrawing the screen as frequently, on certain computers.

Improves the logon experience by removing the occasional 10-second delay between pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and the password prompt displaying.

Addresses an issue in the current version of Windows Vista that makes browsing network file shares consume significant bandwidth and not perform as fast as expected.

Administration Experience

Many of the changes in Windows Vista SP1 will improve the deployment, management, and support experience for Windows Vista customers. The following list describes some of these enhancements:

BitLocker Drive Encryption encrypts extra local volumes. For example, instead of encrypting only drive C, customers can also encrypt drive D, E, and so on.

Addresses problems with printing to local printers from a Windows® Terminal Services session.

The Network Diagnostics tool will help customers solve the most common file sharing problems, in addition to the basic problems that it already diagnoses.

Administrators can control the volumes on which to run Disk Defragmenter.

In addition to these changes, Windows Vista SP1 will change the tools that customers use to manage Group Policy. Administrators requested features in Group Policy that simplify policy management. To do this, the service pack will uninstall the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) and GPEdit.msc will edit local Group Policy by default. In the SP1 timeframe, administrators can download an out-of-band release that will give them the ability to add comments to Group Policy Objects (GPOs) or individual settings and search for specific settings.

Emerging Hardware and Standards

The technology industry is fast-paced and constantly changing. Throughout the life cycle of any version of the Windows operating system, the industry creates new hardware innovations and defines new standards. Windows Vista SP1 will include support for some of these new hardware innovations and standards, because Microsoft expects them to become increasingly important in the near future. The following list describes some of the enhancements of Windows Vista SP1 that will support these emerging innovations and standards:

In the future, flash memory storage and consumer devices will use the exFAT file system. Windows Vista SP1 adds support for this file system to Windows Vista.

The service pack will include support for Secure Digital (SD) Advanced Direct Memory Access (DMA), which will be on compliant SD host controllers soon, to improve transfer performance and decrease CPU utilization.

x64 PCs can boot using the EFI. Windows Vista currently supports network boot by using Windows Deployment Services for x86, a PC’s basic input/output system (BIOS) for x64 PCs, and EFI for IA-64 PCs. Windows Vista SP1 will add support for network boot by using x64 EFI.

The service pack will add support for Direct3D 10.1, adding application programming interfaces (APIs) and features that enable 3-D applications, so game developers can better take advantage of a new generation of Direct3D graphics hardware.

The Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) is a remote access tunneling protocol that will be part of the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) platform. This protocol helps provide full-network virtual private network (VPN) remote access connections without challenges that other protocols face when traversing NATs, Web proxies, and firewalls. Windows Vista SP1 will include support for SSTP.

Evaluating Windows Vista Service Pack 1

In key areas, Windows Vista SP1 will compare favorably to earlier Windows service packs. Windows® 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) and Windows XP SP1 both made limited changes to the user interface and had limited impacts to application compatibility. Both service packs were small in download size. Windows XP SP2 was an exceptional case, as noted in the next paragraph. It significantly impacted the user interface and application compatibility, and was large in download size. While Windows Vista SP1 is still in beta, Microsoft’s intention is that it will make limited changes to the user interface, have limited impact to application compatibility, and the Windows Update and WSUS download size will be small.

The purpose of Windows Vista SP1 is different from the purpose of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Windows XP SP2 was a special update — Microsoft recognized that it was in a unique position to address new and emerging security threats, and the service pack was the best answer. To address these threats, Microsoft incorporated significant, well-considered changes into the service pack, which had a significant impact on application compatibility. For example, the service pack enabled Windows Firewall by default, causing some applications to fail until the customer configured the exceptions in the firewall. However, Microsoft determined that the security benefit far outweighed any challenges the changes caused to end users and administrators. (Likewise, moving from Windows XP SP2 to Windows Vista introduced new, well-considered changes, such as User Account Control, which impacted compatibility).

Although Windows Vista SP1 does compare favorably to earlier service packs, specific benefits have certain costs:

The standalone package will be large (1 GB for x86).

Installing the service pack will require a large amount of free disk space (7 GB for x86 and 12 GB for x64). However, most of this space will be reclaimed after installation.

Deploying Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Windows Vista SP1 will support a number of deployment scenarios and methods, which the upcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Deployment Guide will describe in detail. This section provides an overview of the delivery methods that Windows Vista SP1 will support.

Windows Vista SP1 will support the following delivery methods:

Express. Requires an Internet connection but minimizes the size of the download by sending only the changes needed for a specific computer (approximately 50 MB for x86-based operating systems).

Stand-alone. Recommended for computers with limited Internet connectivity and for applying the service pack to multiple computers. The download size is larger than the express package, but customers can apply a single package to any Windows Vista version and language combination (within a platform). Distribution tools like System Center Configuration Manager 2007 use stand-alone packages to deploy Windows Vista SP1.

Slipstream. The slipstream version of Windows Vista SP1 is media that already contains the service pack, which companies can use to deploy the operating system to new computers or to upgrade existing computers. Availability will be limited. Microsoft will update Windows Vista retail media with Windows Vista SP1 slipstream media in the future. Slipstream media will also be available to Volume Licensing customers.

For express and stand-alone deployment methods, Microsoft recommends the following:

Laptops must be plugged in to an AC power source.

A minimum of 7 GB free disk space on the boot partition, which contains the Windows operating system files, for x86-based operating systems and a minimum of 12 GB free disk space for x64-based operating systems.

The stand-alone deployment method requires administrative credentials.

Summary

Customers can take advantage of all that Windows Vista has to offer by evaluating and deploying the operating system now. They do not need to wait for Windows Vista SP1. Windows Vista enables higher levels of productivity and mobility than earlier versions of Windows, and it helps lower the cost of ownership.

Customers currently evaluating and deploying Windows Vista should continue their evaluation, pilot programs, and deployment on the currently available version of Windows Vista. Microsoft provides the tools and guidance customers need to deploy Windows Vista today and will provide additional guidance, tools, and support for moving to Windows Vista SP1 when Microsoft releases it.

Customers just starting to evaluate Windows Vista should plan a pilot program based on the original release and then move to a pilot or deployment when Windows Vista SP1 becomes available. Pilot programs are an effective way to introduce the operating system into the production environment. Pilot testing is best performed on PCs that present a high business value or a simple upgrade path.

Customers waiting for Windows Vista SP1 should start their compatibility testing on the currently available release of Windows Vista now, and then begin their evaluation and pilot programs on the release candidate of Windows Vista SP1 when it is released. Windows Vista includes architectural changes relative to Windows XP that improve security and reliability. These changes can cause some applications which work on Windows XP not to work on Windows Vista. However, these architectural changes are also part of Windows Vista SP1. For this reason, testing applications on Windows Vista today will be a very good proxy for compatibility with Windows Vista SP1.

See the whitepaper How to Start a Windows Vista Pilot Deployment today to get started moving to Windows Vista so that your organization can begin taking advantage of the benefits that Windows Vista provides.

[1] Beta testers will find that after installing Windows Vista SP1, they no longer have access to GPMC, and that the new, enhanced version of GPMC has not yet been released. In this case, administrators can continue to edit Group Policy by opening a remote desktop session directly to the server or to a PC running the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows Vista.

[2] The Windows Vista Service Pack 1 package is platform specific. Each platform (x86 or x64) requires a separate package.

[3] Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 have been built from the same fundamental source code base since the beginning. Many of the core files are identical between the two products, although each product has unique features, specific individual files and functional behaviors that are appropriate for the intended customer uses for the specific product. For example, Windows Media Center only appears in Windows Vista, while Active Directory or Windows Clustering only appear in Windows Server 2008. Examples of common files shared between the two operating systems are the kernel and core OS files, the networking stack, file sharing. In the past year since the Windows Vista public release, the common files in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 have been continually improved based on customer beta feedback, customer deployments, and Microsoft internal testing.

Say hello to Windows XP SP3, build 3205!

While Microsoft’s [[MSFT]] newly-released build and the one leaked a month ago (Build 3180) may share the same name, we can exclusively reveal that they are not identical releases. This release, also shipped as windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe, is 334.2 megabytes and has been made available to tier-one Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1 beta testers. Hashes are as follows:

CRC: 56e08837
MD5: c8c24ec004332198c47b9ac2b3d400f7

Along with the standalone installer redistributables (in English, Japanese, and German), Microsoft also provided the usual release notes and a list of all the hotfixes included in this release. Contrary to popular belief, Windows XP SP3 does ship with all-new features - not just patches and hotfixes, most of them backported from Windows Vista:

New Windows Product Activation model: no need to enter product key during setup. Thank God for that!

Network Access Protection modules and policies have been brought to XP after being one of the more-well-received features in Windows Vista.

New Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module – the Windows XP SP3 kernel now includes an entire module that provides easy access to multiple cryptographic algorithms and is available for use in kernel-mode drivers and services.

New “Black Hole Router” detection – Windows XP SP3 can detect and protect against rogue routers that are discarding data.

Windows XP SP3 is compatible with all versions of Windows x86, included Embedded, Fundamentals, Start, Professional, Media Center, and Home Editions.

Windows XP SP3 now contains 1,073 patches/hotfixes, not including those in previous service packs. Of the 1,073 included updates, 114 are for security-related issues. The remainder are updates to performance & reliability, bugfixes, improvements to kernel-mode driver modules, and many BSOD fixes.

As with Service Pack 2, these include both previously publicly-available updates (whether through support.microsoft.com or via Windows Update) as well as any and all privately-redistributed updates for select customers or partners with specific problems/scenarios.

The first included update: KB123456 (April 7, 2006). The last: KB942367 (September 29, 2007).
